Health Insurance

We encourage all our clients to obtain their European Health card before leaving home (if an EU citizen) or to obtain adequate travel and medical insurance (or both, if appropriate).

An important motivation for many retirees is the ability to drive down TCoH (Total Cost of Healthcare). This refers not only to premiums, but co-payments, excess amounts, insurance caps, etc. In addition to providing some guidance on the eligibility, access to, and registration with, the national health system (which at the time of writing was the 12th best in the world, according to the WHO), we also work with a panel of health insurance providers and brokers.

In some cases, it is possible to take out insurance once you have arrived in the country. Over time, we encourage all new residents to consider local alternatives which are often less costly even though the range of cover in other countries (outside Portugal) may be lower. We work directly with suppliers and via consumer associations to provide you with a range of options.

As a benchmark, for US clients, we estimate that TCoH can be reduced by between 70& and 90% for most cases.
